Error 706: Connection Came Up Halfway and Then Failed, or Connection Unexpectedly closed

Problem: I get an "Error 706: Connection Came Up Halfway and Then Failed" or "Error 706: Connection Unexpectedly Closed" when I try to check mail.

Solution:

This means that Eudora couldn't communicate with the mail server while checking your mail. You should check the following:

  1. This error can also occur when some settings are entered incorrectly. To check this, first, open the Eudora settings. You can find these by opening Eudora, and going to the special menu at the top of the screen, and then sliding down to "Settings". On the left side, click on "Checking Mail" (you might have to scroll up or down on the left in order to see it).

    • Eudora 4.x: on the right side, check for the line called "Mail Host". In this line, you should have "netid@postofficeX.mail.cornell.edu", where the X is replaced by the number of your postoffice (you also might be on postoffice1, in which case the number is optional)
    • Eudora 5.x: on the right side, the box called "Username" should have your NetID. In the box for "Mail Server", you should have your postoffice information ( postofficeX.mail.cornell .edu).

  2. This error can occur if the one does not attend to their computer while Eudora is open and checking mail. If the Kerberos ticket expires, and Eudora prompts for the password while the user is away, once the password is entered, the Kerberos ticket appears but they get an Error 706. Simply closing this error window and checking the mail again corrects this problem, as does closing the active kerberos ticket and logging in to get a new one.

This occurs because the Kerberos login times out without letting the user know.

  3. If you continue to have problems, you might have to delete your Eudora Settings document. First quit the Eudora application, then delete the Eudora Settings, located in the System Folder (or Documents)-> Eudora Folder -> Eudora Settings. Once the file has been deleted, relaunch Eudora and add your personal information back in. Try checking your mail again -- it should now work properly.
