Access Denied-error 550

Problem: When trying to send mail, Eudora receives the error 550-Access Denied

Solution:

This error occurs when a server refuses to establish an SMTP connection with Eudora. This generally occurs when either the SMTP server is incorrectly entered in the Eudora Settings, or because the computer is contacting Cornell from an independent Internet Service Provider (such as ClarityConnect, RoadRunner, or another location outside Cornell).

First, while in Eudora, go to the special menu and choose "Settings". Click on "Hosts" on the left hand side, and you should see the SMTP information on the right.

  • If you are on campus or dialing into Cornell directly, your SMTP should be blank. (You can also use the full name of your postoffice, such as \"postoffice9.mail.cornell.edu\".)
  • Recommended:  If you are off campus, but would like to use your Internet Service Provider's SMTP server, you should contact your server administrator to find out this information.
  • If you are off campus, you can have the same server as those on campus. If you do, you should make sure that the option "send on check" is turned off. (You can find this in the Sending Mail listing -- click on Sending Mail on the left side of the Eudora Settings, and look on the right for the option "Send on Check". Turn this option off.)
*** If you choose to use the Cornell mail servers, you should note that checking mail is required before sending mail. When mail is checked, it allows the SMTP servers to route your outgoing mail for up to 8 hours without checking your mail again. After that 8 hours is expired, you will have to check your mail before sending any additional mail. Everytime you check your mail, this 8 hour time limit is reset.
