Eudora Error: -3170

Problem: I get an error "-3170: The domain name does not exist" when I try to check mail.

Solution:

This means there is a problem contacting the server on the network. To troubleshoot this problem, first open your Eudora Settings, located under the Special menu (in Eudora) under Settings. Click on Checking Mail on the left side, then in the box on the right, check for either a "POP account" field (Eudora 3.x), a Mail Host field (Eudora 4.x), or a Mail Server field (Eudora 5.x). To make sure that your POP server is typed correctly, it should be similar to one of the following:

  • Eudora 3.x (POP account)
    • netid@postoffice.mail.cornell.edu
    • netid@postofficeX.mail.cornell.edu (where "netid" is replaced with your netid, and "X" is the number of your postoffice)

  • Eudora 4.x (Mail Host)
    • postoffice.mail.cornell.edu
    • postofficeX.mail.cornell.edu (where "X" is the number of your postoffice, and your "User Name" is your netid)

  • Eudora 5.x (Mail Server)
    • postoffice.mail.cornell.edu
    • postofficeX.mail.cornell.edu (where "X" is the number of your postoffice, and your "User Name" is your netid)
