Set Up Eudora
- Using POP -
For Your Own Computer
You can have Eudora handle your mail in two different ways: using POP
or using IMAP. Please visit the comparison
page for a discussion of the pros and cons.
If you had an earlier version of Eudora installed, upgrading to Eudora
6.2 will NOT change your settings from POP to IMAP. If you want to switch
to IMAP, please see the IMAP setup page for
instructions.
These instructions explain how to configure Eudora for use by one person
on a personal computer. To set up Eudora for more than one person using
the same computer, see Setting Up Eudora for Multiple Users. If Eudora
is being used to check a special mailbox, see Configuring Your Special Mailbox.
You need to complete two steps:
- Set Your Mail Preference in Who I Am
- Configure Eudora for Windows (using Wizard)
OR
Configure Eudora for Windows (Manually)
OR
Configure Eudora for Macintosh
Set Your Mail
Preference in Who I Am
Before you can access your Cornell e-mail account, you need to specify
that you want to receive electronic mail via Cornell's postoffice system.
To do this, use Cornell's web-based Who I Am service.
- In the Bear Access channel in uPortal.Cornell,
choose Who I Am in the Mail and Directory Services folder.
(Or use any browser to go to http://whoiam.cornell.edu)
- If you see the Bear Access Update
Notification dialog box, click Download so that updated
software can be transferred to your computer.
- If you do not have a Kerberos ticket active, you will be asked to
log on through either Kerberos or CUWebLogin.
- In Who I Am, click on the Electronic Mail link.
- To receive messages addressed to your NetID@cornell.edu
address (for example, ewe2@cornell.edu), make sure the
first radio button is selected.
(Select the second button only if you want all messages sent to you
to be rejected. Select the third button only if you want messages to
be delivered to more than one address; enter those addresses in the
box.)
- Make a note of your complete e-mail address. It is listed in the text
associated with the first radio button and takes the form
NetID@postofficeX.mail.cornell.edu
with a number between 6 and 10 replacing the X.
The number is very important!
- Click the Set it! button. (If you see a Security Information
box, click the Continue button.)
- You may want to check or modify your directory entry at this time.
Depending on your Cornell affiliation, you can use Who I Am to
edit all or part of your directory information by clicking the Electronic
Directory link and modifying the information found there. Then click
Update Listing at the bottom of the screen.
Now you need to configure Eudora using one of the three methods below:
Configure
Eudora for Windows (using the Wizard)
If you were using an earlier version of Eudora and have just upgraded
to Eudora 6.2, you will need to follow the manual
Windows steps listed below.
If you have never used any version of Eudora before on the computer you
are using, or if you have deleted Eudora from your computer and then reinstalled
it, follow these steps to set up Eudora to access your account on Cornell's
postoffice system.
- Start Eudora and enter your NetID and password if requested. The New
Account Wizard window will open automatically. If this window doesn't
open, follow the instructions below for configuring
Windows manually.
- The first screen welcomes you to the Wizard.
Click Next.
- Click the radio button labeled "Create a brand new email account."
Click Next.
- Type in your full name as you want it to appear in outgoing messages.
You may use both upper- and lowercase.
Click Next.
- Type in your e-mail address. This is your NetID followed by "@cornell.edu"
(for example: ewe2@cornell.edu ).
Click Next.
- Type in your NetID where it asks for your Login Name. Click Next.
- For "Your Incoming E-Mail Server" type your full post office
address as it appeared in WhoIAm.
Click Next.
- For "Outgoing E-Mail Server" type
authusersmtp.mail.cornell.edu
Click Next.
- The final step congratulates you on your success.
Click Finish.
- You're ALMOST done. If you are going to use Kerberos to protect
your password, continue with step 11. If you are going to use TLS,
follow the steps on our Using TLS page. (If you
don't know which to use, we suggest Kerberos.)
- Set up Kerberos:
- Go to Eudora's Tools menu and choose Options.
- Click the Kerberos icon in the scroll box on the left.
(You will need to scroll down to see it; it is near the bottom
of the list.)
- For Kerberos 4 (POP only), click the Off button.
- Click OK.
If you need to change your settings later, reopen the same dialog box
by choosing Options from the Tools menu.
Configuring Eudora for Windows Manually
Follow these manual steps only if the New Account Wizard window did not
open the first time you started Eudora.
If you were using an earlier version of Eudora and have just upgraded
to Eudora 5.2, some of the following information will already be filled
in. Please check all information carefully to make sure your settings
are correct.
- Go to Eudora's Tools menu and choose Options.
- Click the Getting Started icon in the scroll box on the left.
- In the Real name box, type your full name as you want it
to appear in messages you send out. You can use both upper- and lowercase

(for example, ewe2@cornell.edu).
- In the Mail Server (Incoming) box, type
postofficeX.mail.cornell.edu
replacing the "X" with
the number in your postoffice address as you entered it in Who I Am.
Double-check this! It must match your entry
in Who I Am!
- In the Login Name box, type your NetID (for
example, ewe2).
- If you use a Cornell service to connect to the network (either by
connecting directly to the campus network, or dialing in through EZ-Remote
or Express Lane), enter
authusersmtp.mail.cornell.edu
in the SMTP Server (Outgoing) field.
Note: If you are using some other ISP (such as RoadRunner, AOL, or
Lightlink) and your mail server does not have "cornell.edu"
in its name, you should refer to your ISP's directions for this field.
- Click to put a check mark in the box next to Allow authentication.
- Click the Incoming Mail icon in the scroll box on the left.
- Select the Server Configuration radio button for POP.
- Click the Sending Mail icon in the Category scroll area on
the left.
- Make sure Secure Sockets when Sending is set to If Available,
STARTTLS.

continue with steps 14-17. If you are going to use TLS, follow
the steps on our Using TLS page. (If you don't
know which to use, we suggest Kerberos.)
- Click the Kerberos icon in the scroll box on the left.
(You will need to scroll down to see it; it is near the bottom of
the list.)

If you need to change your settings later, reopen the same dialog box
by choosing Options from the Tools menu.

continue with step 15-20. If you are going to use TLS, follow
the steps on our Using TLS page. (If you don't
