Most e-mail clients can send much more than plain text. Images. Lines. Fonts and colors and styles, oh my!
For example, here's a quiet little message like one you might receive:
Looks pretty simple, right?
But here's what the sender's e-mail client actually sent you (roll your mouse over the image to see what's code and what's text):
Blech! That's why an e-list manager can get confused if you send it commands that aren't plain text.
