E-lists at Cornell

Reviewing E-list Membership

The information on this page was changed in major ways in May 2007.

The Lyris review command returns basic information about an e-list.

List administrators can use the review command to view a list of all members on their e-list. (There is also a setting in the web interface to make that listing available to all members or to everyone regardless of membership.)

This page discusses

You can also review members by using the Lyris Web Interface.

To receive basic information about any list:

Send an e-mail message to

listname-request@cornell.edu

where listname is the name of the list you want to join, including the hyphen and the letter L at the end of the list name.

Your message should be the single word

review

The message must be sent in plain text, that is, no formatting, font styles, or HTML code. (How do I send plain text?)

Here's an example of a review command request:

And this is an example of the reply you'll get from Lyris:

To receive both basic information and a listing of all members:

Explaining this one is a bit tricky, since the results depend on how the e-list administrator(s) have configured their list settings.

  • If they've allowed everyone to see the listing of members, then all anyone needs to do is use the one-line command listed above.
  • If they've allowed members to see the listing of members, then any member or administrator can use the one-line command listed above.
  • If, however, they've restricted access to administrators only, then an administrator will need to use the three-line command listed below. (This is the default setting when a new e-list is created.)

You still need to send an e-mail message to

listname-request@cornell.edu

where listname is the name of the list you want to join, including the hyphen and the letter L at the end of the list name.

Your message will have three lines of text based on the following syntax:

login password

review

end

where password is your password as administrator of the e-list

The message must be sent in plain text, that is, no formatting, font styles, or HTML code. (How do I send plain text?)

Here's an example of a review command request from an administrator:

response to review command from administrator

The reply you'll get from Lyris will look like the reply shown above, with a list of all the members' e-mail addresses added to the end.
