E-lists at Cornell

Helping Your E-list's Members

The information on this page was changed in major ways in May 2007.

One of the responsibilities of an e-list administrator is to provide technical assistance to the list's subscribers.

You'll get messages and calls from people around campus (possibly around the world) who need help. Your primary resource is this set of web pages. Here you should be able to find answers to nearly all of the questions you'll get. And, on this page, we've assembled some "boilerplate" text that you can customize for your list. If you have any locally created documents (either on paper or online), feel free to use this tip sheet as a starting point.

It will be most helpful to your members and potential members if you customize the text we've included here by using the actual name of your list, instead of referring to it as "listname."

If you "cut and paste" the text below into your documents, when you get to the part where you "paste," instead, from the Edit menu, choose Paste as or Paste special, then choose to paste as unformatted text.

Explain how to join (subscribe to) your list

(Please please please personalize the text in the following box with the name of your list. Otherwise you'll get many cries for help.)

To join this e-list, send an e-mail message to

listname-request@cornell.edu

Leave the subject line blank. The body of the message should be a single word:

join

Notes:
- Send this message in plain text - no formatting or fonts or colors.
- Send this message FROM the e-mail address where you want to receive messages posted to the e-list.

Explain how a list member can post a message to the list

(Please please please personalize the text in the following box with the name of your list. Otherwise you'll get many cries for help.)

Sending a message to the be posted to the e-list is exactly like sending any other e-mail message. You simply put the e-list address in the To field, for example,

sheep-shearing-L@cornell.edu

Notes:
- Don't forget the"-L" that comes just before "@cornell.edu"
- All lists hosted by CIT will have an e-mail address that includes "@cornell.edu"
- For most lists you will need to send your message from the address where you receive postings.

Explain how to leave (unsubscribe from) your e-list

(Please please please personalize the text in the following box with the name of your list. Otherwise you'll get many cries for help.)

To leave this e-list, send an e-mail message to

listname-request@cornell.edu

Leave the subject line blank. The body of the message should be a single word:

leave

Notes:
- Send this message in plain text - no formatting or fonts or colors.
- Send this message FROM the e-mail address where you have received messages posted to the e-list.

Explain how a list member can choose whether to receive each message individually or as a once-a-day digest.

(Please please please personalize the text in the following box with the name of your list. Otherwise you'll get many cries for help.)

You can choose to receive messages posted to an e-list in one of four ways:
A. Mail - (this is the default method) You receive each posting as an individual e-mail message.
B. Digest - You receive only a message a day. It contains all of the postings for that day.
C. MIME Digest - You receive one message a day. Each posting for the day is delivered as an attachment to that message.
D. Nomail - You do not receive any messages posted to the list. When you want to resume receiving messages, send another SET command specifying one of the other three choices.

To change the way you receive messages for a particular list, send an e-mail message to

listname-request@cornell.edu

Leave the subject line blank. The body of the message should be a single line with the following format:

set option

where you replace the word "option" with one of the following four values:
mail
digest
mimedigest
nomail

Notes:
- Send this message in plain text - no formatting or fonts or colors.
- Send this message FROM the e-mail address where you have received messages posted to the e-list.

Explain how a list member can get in touch with the list's administrator

(Please please please personalize the text in the following box with the name of your list. Otherwise you'll get many cries for help.)

If you have questions or comments about a particular e-list, you can contact the list administrators via e-mail. Send your message to owner-listname@cornell.edu

For example,
owner-cit-alert-L@cornell.edu

Notes:
- Don't forget the"-L" that comes just before "@cornell.edu" in the listname.
- You can send your message from any e-mail address, but it may help the list administrator to know what address you use with the list.
