E-lists at Cornell

Deleting Members from an E-list (Lyris)

Only list administrators may delete (also called remove and unsubscribe) members other than themselves from an e-list.

You can also delete members by using the Lyris Web Interface.

To delete one member,

send an e-mail message to

listname-request@cornell.edu

where listname is the name of the list you want to join, including the hyphen and the letter L at the end of the list name.

Your message needs three lines of text, based on the following syntax

login password

delete emailaddress

end

where

  • password is your password as administrator of the e-list
  • emailaddress is the full address of the new member. Do not include the member's name.

The message must be sent in plain text, that is, no formatting, font styles, or HTML code. (How do I send plain text?)

Here's an example:

example of deleting one member

Optional: To delete this address without having Lyris send a "you have been unsubscribed" message, put the word "quiet" (no quotation marks) at the end of the "delete" line.

To delete more than one member,

send an e-mail message to

listname-request@cornell.edu

where listname is the name of the list you want to join, including the hyphen and the letter L at the end of the list name.

Your message will have several lines of text, based on the following syntax

login password

delete <<

emailaddress

emailaddress

emailaddress

>>

end

where

  • password is your password as administrator of the e-list
  • emailaddress is the full address of the member to be deleted.

The message must be sent in plain text, that is, no formatting, font styles, or HTML code.

Do not include the members' names.

The double "less than" signs and double "greater than" signs are required to show the beginning and end of your list of members to be removed.

Here's an example:

example of deleting several members

Optional: To delete these addresses without having Lyris send a "you have been unsubscribed" message to each one, put the word "quiet" (no quotation marks) on the second line, between "delete" and "<<"

To delete ALL members of a list (except for administrators),

send an e-mail message to

listname-request@cornell.edu

where listname is the name of the list for which you want to delete all members, including the hyphen and the letter L at the end of the list name.

Your message needs three lines of text, based on the following syntax

login password

delete all

end

where

  • password is your password as administrator of the e-list
  • the word all replaces individual e-mail addresses

The message must be sent in plain text, that is, no formatting, font styles, or HTML code.

Danger Danger!

Be really, really certain that you want to completely remove ALL members of a list before you send the "all" command. You won't be asked "Are you sure?" You won't have an easy way to undo the command. Think twice before you click the Send button. Okay, think three times.
