E-lists at Cornell

Adding Members to an E-list (Lyris)

The information on this page was changed in major ways in May 2007.

Only list administrators may add members (other than themselves) to an e-list.
(If you want to become a member of a list, see our instructions for subscribing yourself.)

You can also add members by using the Lyris Web Interface.

To add one member,

send an e-mail message to

listname-request@cornell.edu

where listname is the name of the list including the hyphen and the letter L at the end of the list name.

Your message needs three lines of text, based on the following syntax

login password

add emailaddress name

end

where

  • password is your password as administrator of the e-list
  • emailaddress is the full address of the new member
  • name is the name of the person being added

The person's name is optional.
Do not put quotes around the name.

The message must be sent in plain text, that is, no formatting, font styles, or HTML code. (How do I send plain text?)

Here's an example of a message to add one member:

Optional: To add this address without having Lyris send a "Hello, welcome to the list" message, put the word "quiet" (no quotation marks) at the end of the "add" line.

To add more than one new member,

the syntax is quite different from adding one member at a time. You still need to send an e-mail message to

listname-request@cornell.edu

where listname is the name of the list including the hyphen and the letter L at the end of the list name.

Your message will have several lines of text, based on the following syntax

login password

add <<

name emailaddress

name emailaddress

name emailaddress

>>

end

where

  • password is your password as administrator of the e-list
  • emailaddress is the full address of the each member
  • name is the name of the person being added

The person's name is optional.
Do not put quotes around the name.
Put only one e-mail address (with optional name) per line.

The message must be sent in plain text, that is, no formatting, font styles, or HTML code. (How do I send plain text?)

The double "less than" signs and double "greater than" signs are required to show the beginning and end of your list of new members. As you can see in the example shown below, the new member names (if you choose to include them) come before the e-mail addresses. Again, including the members' names is optional.

Here's an example of a message adding multiple members:

Optional: To add these addresses without having Lyris send a "Hello, welcome to the list" message to each one, put the word "quiet" (no quotation marks) after the list name, before the double "less than" signs.
