Access to the Network
for Cornell Faculty and Staff

NetIDs

A Network ID (or NetID) is necessary for many network activities at Cornell, including sending and receiving e-mail. New faculty and staff receive their NetIDs as part of the employment process. As part of this process, most new employees fill out a form to request an initial password for use with their NetID. You should choose a new password and replace your initial password using Bear Access as soon as possible after your NetID appears in the Electronic Directory.

Some departments provide an orientation course about computing at Cornell when you get your NetID. To find out if your department offers one, check with your Human Resources representative.

Bear Access

When your computer is connected to the network, you can use the Bear Access CD to install the Eudora e-mail program and Symantec AntiVirus protection. The Bear Access CD can be obtained from the CIT Contact Center (HelpDesk) in 119 CCC on the Ag Quad; or if you have a fast connection to the Internet, you can download this software under the Bear Access tab in uPortal.Cornell.

All software on the Bear Access CD and under the Bear Access tab in uPortal.Cornell is free to members of the Cornell community.

You can also use uPortal.Cornell to access Cornell-specific offerings such as the Cornell University Library, Faculty Advisor, and the Cornell Store.

On Campus: Ethernet

The Technology Support Professional for your department or college can help you connect your computer to the network with an Ethernet connection. If you don't know who this person is, contact your administrative support person.

On Campus: RedRover

RedRover is Cornell's wireless network. There is no charge to use RedRover, but you will need to register your laptop or handheld device to use it. To register or find out more, visit the RedRover web site.

Off Campus Access: EZ-Remote

When you are not working at your computer at Cornell, you may still need to connect to the network. You can do this through EZ-Remote, Cornell's network dial-up service. With EZ-Remote you can dial in to the network from off-campus offices, from home, and from on-the-road. On-campus offices without direct network wiring also can use EZ-Remote.

Your academic department may want to pay for a group subscription to EZ-Remote so that you can be assured of network access from any location.

For information about access while travelling away from Ithaca and campus, see On the Road Network Connections

If you have problems with network access, consider these options:

  • If you believe the problem has to do with an application that came on the Bear Access CD (or was under the uPortal.Cornell Bear Access tab) or an online service such as electronic mail, contact the CIT Contact Center at helpdesk@cornell.edu.

  • Some colleges and programs have local helpdesks set up to support their special issues.

  • If you believe the problem is associated with your computer configuration or wiring, contact your Technology Support Professional. This person is authorized to contact the Network Operations Center for additional support, if he or she cannot solve the problem.
