CIT no longer supports
Macintosh operating systems older than Mac OS X 10.2
(see Computer Recommendations),
so these systems may not be viable in the Cornell environment.
This page is archived and no longer maintained.
The instructions on this page are only for Macintosh computers that are connected
to the network via an on-campus Ethernet connection. If you use a dial-up modem
and EZ-Remote to connect to the campus network, you should use the instructions
for connecting to EZ-Remote instead.
In order to use the Cornell network via an Ethernet connection,
you will need to contact your network administrator to obtain:
- an IP address
- the subnet mask address
- the router (or default gateway) address
- Under the Apple menu, choose Control Panels and then
open AppleTalk.
- Make sure the Connect via box is set to Ethernet.
Close the window and, if prompted, save the changes you've made.
- Return to Control Panels and choose TCP/IP.
If you don't see TCP/IP in your Control Panels list, see
Selecting Network Software in the Appendix.
- In the Connect via box, select Ethernet from the
pop-up menu.
- In the Configure box, select Manually from the pop-up menu.
- From the network information you recorded above,
- Enter your IP Address in the IP Address box on the screen.
- Enter your Subnet mask in the Subnet mask box.
- Enter your Gateway address for the Router address.
- For the Name server addr, type in these numbers:
132.236.56.250
128.253.180.2
192.35.82.50
- In the Search domains box, type:
cornell.edu
cit.cornell.edu
- Very important:
Check all your entries for accuracy;
your connection won't work if you have any errors in this box.
Then close the TCP/IP window.
- When asked to save the information, click Save.
- You are now connected to the campus network!
Follow these steps to configure MacTCP:
-
Select Control Panels from the Apple menu.
-
Open MacTCP by double-clicking on its icon. A box similar to the
one below is displayed. You should see two icons, one for EtherTalk and
one for Ethernet or Ethernet Built-In. No matter what icons are displayed,
you must always select the Ethernet or Ethernet Built-In icon.
|
|
Highlight the Ethernet or Ethernet Built-In icon
by clicking on it as described in Step 2.

Type your IP address here as described in Step 5.
|

|
|
|
|
Click here to go to the MacTCP Configuration dialog as described in Step 3.
|
-
Click on the More... button to display the MacTCP configuration
dialog depicted below.
-
In the Obtain Address box, click on Manually.
Click OK to return to the previous screen.
-
Type your IP Address
(from your Network Connection Record, above)
in the box labeled IP Address and check it carefully to make sure
there are no typing errors. Click on the More button again.
Notice the system
automatically fills in the Net, Subnet, and Node boxes for you in the IP
Address box, and you do not need to change the entries that appear. These
entries do not need to be locked. If you do lock them, you cannot change
your IP address on the previous screen. Do not enter the sample IP or
Gateway Addresses shown in the image.
-
In the IP Address box, click on the small box after the Class field to see
a pop-up menu of letters. Select B.
-
Place the cursor on the handle of the sliding control below the Subnet Mask
field. Drag the handle until the Subnet Mask number
matches the number provided by your network administrator.
In the sample above, the Subnet Mask is 255.255.255.0.
Your number may be different.
-
In the Routing Information box, enter the Gateway Address
provided by your network administrator.
-
In the Domain Name Server Information box:
-
Type cornell.edu in the first box under the Domain label.
-
Type 132.236.56.250 in the box that appears next to it,
under the IP address label.
-
Now go to the second box under Domain. Type just a period (.) here
and then enter 128.253.180.2 in the box next to it.
-
A third set of boxes appears. Once again, type just a period (.)
under Domain
and then enter 192.35.82.50 in the box next to it.
-
Return to the Control Panel by clicking on OK.
When the system displays a message about restarting your Macintosh
for changes to take effect, click OK.
-
Restart your workstation. MacTCP should now be installed and configured.
Recovering from Errors
If you make a mistake setting up your network software, Bear Access or one
of your network service applications will display one of a variety of error
messages. If you have configured the network software incorrectly, then it
is likely that the IP address
your workstation is using is not unique or that other network information
is incorrect. Check that you entered your IP address and Gateway address
correctly and that you restarted your computer after configuring the
network software.
Appendix
To tell what system version your Macintosh is using, do the following:
- Pull down the Application menu in the upper right corner
of your screen and choose Finder, if necessary.
- Pull down the Apple menu in the upper left hand corner of the
screen and choose About this Computer... or About this Macintosh...
- In the box that opens up, look for the system version and make a note
of it. If the system version is 7.5.3 or higher, you can install the
TCP/IP (Open Transport) software;
if it is 7.5.1 or lower, you must use older software called
MacTCP.
If TCP/IP does not appear in your Control Panels list:
- In the Apple Extras folder, double-click the Network
Software Selector to open it.
- Choose Use Open Transport Networking.
- Restart your computer to make the TCP/IP control panel appear.
