Using Your Laptop in
Multiple Locations

If you have a laptop that you use in more than one location, for example, off-campus with a modem dial-up connection and on-campus with an Ethernet connection, find out how to switch between connections easily. Select your operating system below:

Mac OS 8.6 to 9.2

Setting Up Location Manager

Configuring AppleTalk

    1. From the Apple menu, select Control Panels, and then AppleTalk.
    2. From the File menu, select Configurations.
    3. Select Default, and click Duplicate.

    4. In the Duplicate Configuration window, type Dial-up and click OK.

    5. In the Configurations window, select Dial-up and click Make Active.

    7. You will be returned to the AppleTalk panel. Select Connect via: Remote Only. Some versions may say Connect via: Remote Only or Modem Port.

    8. Close the AppleTalk panel and when prompted, click Save.
    9. From the Apple menu, select Control Panels, and then AppleTalk.
    10. From the File menu, select Configurations.
    11. Select Default, and click Duplicate.
    12. In the Duplicate Configuration window, type Ethernet and click OK.
    13. In the Configurations window, select Ethernet and click Make Active.

    15. In the AppleTalk panel, select Connect via: Ethernet built-in.

    17. Close the AppleTalk panel and when prompted, click Save.

Configuring TCP/IP

    1. From the Apple menu, select Control Panels, and then TCP/IP.
    2. From the File menu, select Configurations.
    3. Select Default, and click Duplicate.
    4. In the Duplicate Configuration window, type Dial-up and click OK.
    5. In the Configurations window, select Dial-up and click Make Active.
    6. In the Connect via box, select PPP.
    7. In the Configure box, select Using PPP Server.
    8. The IP Address, Subnet mask, and Router address will be supplied by the server and therefore are not displayed.

    9. In the Name server addr. box, type:

        132.236.56.250
        128.253.180.2
        192.35.82.50

    10. In the Search domains box, type:

        cit.cornell.edu
        cornell.edu

    11. Close the TCP/IP control panel and click Save when a message asks if you want to save this configuration.
    12. From the Apple menu, select Control Panels, and then TCP/IP.
    13. From the File menu, select Configurations.
    14. Select Default, and click Duplicate.
    15. In the Duplicate Configuration window, type Ethernet and click OK.
    16. In the Configurations window, select Ethernet and click Make Active.
    17. In the TCP/IP panel, select Connect via: Ethernet built-in and enter your networking information. To obtain your networking information, contact your network administrator or technical support provider.
    18. Close the TCP/IP panel and click Save when prompted.

Before you set up Location Manager:

    • Set up your Ethernet connection
    • Set up your modem dial-up connection
    • Test each connection by opening a web browser.
    • When you are certain that your connections work, proceed with the following steps to set up and use Location Manager.

Configure Location Manager

  1. From the Apple menu, select Control Panels, and then Location Manager.
  2. Select File, and then New Location...
  3. In the next window, type Dial-up and click Save.
  4. In the Location Manager window, under Settings, place a check mark in the AppleTalk & TCP/IP box.
  5. Select AppleTalk & TCP/IP, and click Edit.

  6. Click Open TCP/IP.

  8. From the File menu, select Configurations..., then select Dialup and click Make Active.
  9. Close the TCP/IP panel.
  10. Click Open AppleTalk.

  11. From the File menu, select Configurations..., then select Dialup and click Make Active.
  12. Close AppleTalk window and click Apply and the Location Manager will associate these settings with the location Dial-up.
  13. From the File menu, select New Location...
  14. In the next window, type Ethernet and click Save.
  15. In the Location Manager window, under Settings, place a check mark in the AppleTalk & TCP/IP box.
  16. Select AppleTalk & TCP/IP, and click Edit.
  17. Click Open TCP/IP.
  18. From the File menu, select Configurations..., then select Ethernet and click Make Active.
  19. Close the TCP/IP panel.
  20. Click Open AppleTalk.
  21. From the File menu, select Configurations..., then select Ethernet and click Make Active.
  22. Close the AppleTalk panel.
  23. Click Apply and the Location Manager will associate these settings with the location Ethernet.
  24. Close Location Manager and click Save when prompted.

Switching between Ethernet and Dial-up

Now that your Location Manager is set up, you can switch between your Ethernet and dial-up connection quickly.

  1. To change your location, open the Apple menu, select Control Panels and then Location Manager.
    You can also access Location Manager by clicking the Location Manager icon in your control strip, and selecting the location you want to make active.

  2. From the Current Location menu, select your location. Click OK, close Location Manager.
  3. A window will display to notify you that your switch was successful (this may take a few seconds). Click OK and use the network services as you would normally.

Mac OS X

For OS X, set up your Ethernet and dial-up connections. Plug your Ethernet or telephone cable into your laptop and OS X will automatically detect which connection is available.
