Cellular Phone Service for the Cornell University Community

Short-term Cellular Phone Rentals

This service is not for day-to-day cell phone use. For ongoing cell phone service, Cornell has contracted with Verizon Wireless.

Nextel cell phone rentals are only for:

  • Faculty and staff
  • University business
  • Short-term use.

Nextel is not able to rent for international use.

Fees are based on anticipated use of services ranging from $1 to $4 per day per unit and can be further negotiated at the discretion of Nextel.

All fees collected from this program will be channeled to the United Way of Tompkins County via the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce. The Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce will collect a 5% fee (from the total) for processing the rental fee payment. The charge to the Cornell Procurement card will read "Nextel Phone Rental". Please also keep in mind the $500 per day limit on your Procurement Cards.

At time of drop-off, equipment training will be provided and the equipment timer will be noted. At time of pickup, the timer will be checked for actual use. (The equipment timer works like an odometer for a car). Use exceeding 30 minutes per day per phone, will incur the "Heavy Use Fee" of $4 per day per phone.

When the equipment is returned, the rental information and fee will be forwarded to the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce for processing. Once a month they will forward the total collected to the United Way of Tompkins County. A receipt for the fees charged to your Procurement Card will be mailed to you by the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce.

Please contact Nell to arrange for the service as much in advance as possible. Rentals are subject to availability.
