How to Register a Device with a Browser in Windows XP

Use this procedure to register devices that have browsers including computers and some handheld devices. If you want to register a device that doesn't have a browser, for example a video game console or a cable box, see the How to Register a Device without a Browser page.

Cornell University Policy 5.7, Network Registry, requires registration of all devices connected to the network.

To register, enter your NetID and the hardware (MAC) address for your device. For students, the hardware address is used to track RedRover usage totals for network usage-based billing (NUBB).

Register a device with a browser

  1. Disconnect any wired (Ethernet or modem) connections. Make sure you are in an area with RedRover coverage.

  2. Click Start. Click Connect To, and then click Wireless Network Connection.

Windows > Start > Connect To > Wireless Network Connection

  3. Click RedRover, and then click Connect.

  10. Close the browser, and then restart your computer.

You can now use the RedRover network.

Your RedRover registration is valid for 1 year. When it is about to expire, you will receive an e-mail message reminding you to re-register.

NOTE: Because every device has a unique hardware address, you must register each device you use on the RedRover network individually.
