CornellC Users host Initiated Upload and Download

Hummingbird dropped support for Host Initiated Uploads and Downloads which may still be used by applications running in VM/CMS on the CornellC mainframe. If you are running HostExplorer 6.2.0.11 you should NOT upgrade to HostExplorer 2007 unless instructed.

The only version of HostExplorer supported under Windows Vista is HostExplorer 2007 (Version 12). HostExplorer 2006, HostExplorer 6.2.0.11 and TCP3270 appear to run under Vista, but users are encouraged to upgrade to the latest version if possible.

In an effort to minimize the impact of this upgrade, Bear Access Fall 2007 includes both "CornellC using TCP 3270" and CornellC using HostExplorer 6.2.0.11".

CornellC, Instruct1, and Instruct3 will launch either HostExplorer 2006 (11.x) or HostExplorer 2007 (12.x) depending on which version has been installed.

Pre-Configured Connections to Hosts

Connections to Other Hosts (using HostExplorer 2007)

Host Explorer also allows you to connect to other hosts on which you have an account. For instance, you can connect to a departmental computer or to a system at another university.

  1. On your desktop double click Hummingbird Neighborhood.
  2. In the Hummingbird Neighborhood dialog that appears, double click the New HostExplorer Profile button.
  3. A New Profile window appears

  4. In Profile Name box, type a descriptive name for this host, such as My Profile.
  5. From the Profile Type list, select VT Display for most hosts, or 3270 Display for IBM mainframe hosts such as CornellC.
  6. From the Theme list, select Default VT for most hosts, or Default 3270 for IBM mainframe hosts such as CornellC.
  7. From the Connect By list, select Telnet for most hosts including IBM mainframe hosts such as CornellC.
  8. Enter the DNS name for the host you wish to connect to.
  9. Click the Connect box.
  10. Click OK to connect.
  11. The settings you entered are automatically saved under the Profile Name. The next time you start HostExplorer, you can connect to the same host by clicking the profile name and clicking the Connect button. If you need to change any of the settings, right-click the profile name and then select Properties from the drop down list.

Connections to Other Hosts (using HostExplorer 6.2.0.11 or McGill TCP 3270)

If you are required to use either HostExplorer 6.2.0.11 or McGill TCP 3270 because you rely on features no longer available in HostExplorer 2007, you will need to open Windows Explorer and launch hostex32.exe or tcp3270.exe to connect to hosts not pre-defined in the Bear Access channel of uPortal.Cornell.

Install HostExplorer 2007

If you wish to use the new version of HostExplorer 2007 and already have HostExplorer 6.2.0.11 installed, go to Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs and uninstall HostExplorer before installing HostExplorer 2007.

You will need to open the Installers->Campus Hosts folder in the Bear Access channel on uPortal.Cornell and select HostExplorer 2007 for Windows link to download and install it.

Install HostExplorer 6.2.0.11

If you wish to use HostExplorer 6.2.0.11 and do not have it installed on your system, you will need to open the Installers->Campus Hosts folder in the Bear Access channel on uPortal.Cornell and select HostExplorer 6.2.0.11 for Windows link to download and install it. Afterwards, you may use the CornellC using HostExplorer 6.2.0.11 (Windows Only) link to launch HostExplorer.
