Usenet Newsgroups:
Thunderbird News Reader for Mac OS and Windows

Starting in June 2005, Thunderbird's news reader (but not e-mail) application for both Mac OS and Windows is supported as part of the Cornell package of services called Bear Access. A news reader can be used to:

  • Read articles available in Usenet newsgroups
  • Post your own articles in Usenet newsgroups
  • Select the newsgroups in which you want to participate
What Is Usenet?
Usenet, also called Network News at Cornell, is a global system for sharing views and information on a tremendous variety of topics. Each topic has its own newsgroup. There are more than 15,000 newsgroups currently available through Cornell's network news server. See general information.

To use Thunderbird news reader at Cornell:

  1. Install Thunderbird
    1. First, install the Bear Access infrastructure needed for Cornell downloads
    2. Next, go to uPortal.Cornell
    3. Click on the Bear Access tab
    4. In the Bear Access channel (right column), scroll down to the Network Tools folder, open this folder if it's not already open, and click on News Reader
    5. You may see a message that Thunderbird news reader needs to be downloaded. Click Download
    6. You'll see a message that Thunderbird news reader needs to be installed. Click Install
    7. You'll see a series of installation windows. For illustrations, see Nidelven's introduction to Thunderbird.

  2. Set up a newsgroup account
    1. A window labeled "Account Wizard - New Account Setup" should appear. If it does not, then do the following:
      1. In the Tools menu, choose Account Settings
      2. Click Add Account
    2. Click on Newsgroup account
    3. Enter your name and e-mail address as you would like them to appear on outgoing messages
    4. In the Newsgroup Server box, enter newsstand.cit.cornell.edu
    5. Fill in any name for this account; for example, Cornell Newsgroups
    6. Click Finish

  3. Subscribe to newsgroups
    1. Double-click on your new account
    2. Click on Manage newsgroup subscriptions
    3. Scroll down to "cornell", and look for newsgroups that interest you, for example cornell.marketplace
    4. Place a check mark next to each newsgroup you would like to receive
    5. Click Subscribe
    6. Click OK

  4. Read messages
    1. Show the list of newsgroups you've subscribed to by clicking the plus sign (Windows) or triangle (Mac OS) to the left of your account name
    2. Click once on a newsgroup to select it
      • Names may be abbreviated; for example, c.marketplace
    3. If the newsgroup has many messages, you may see a "Download Headers" box; indicate how many messages you want, then click Download
    4. Click once on any message to read it

  5. Set up authentication for posting messages
    1. Click the name of your newsgroup account
    2. Click on View settings for this account
    3. Click on Outgoing Server (SMTP)
    4. In the Server Name box, fill in authusersmtp.mail.cornell.edu
    5. In the "Use secure connections" area, click TLS
    6. Click OK

  6. Post a message
    1. Click on the newsgroup where you wish to post
    2. Click the Write button in the top toolbar
    3. Type your message, and click Send
