Usenet Newsgroups
(Online Bulletin Boards)
Usenet is a collection of thousands of newsgroups,
each representing a different topic or group of people. Each newsgroup
functions like an online bulletin board, allowing you to both post
to a newsgroup and read posts written by others. You can participate
in already existing newsgroups, or you may wish to
create one of your own.
No matter which news reader application you choose to use, for access
to Cornell newsgroups you'll need the name of Cornell's news server:
newsstand.cit.cornell.edu
(note the "ss" in "newsstand"!)
Occasionally new groups created elsewhere do not appear to be
available via Cornell's news server (newsstand.cit.cornell.edu).
This is a result of one of two situations:
- You don't have an up-to-date list of newsgroups and need to
obtain the full group list.
- The newsgroup has not yet been included on CIT's news server,
and you need to request its inclusion.
