"The application failed to initialize properly (0x0000142)"
(Windows 2000)
"The KRBV4W32.DLL file cannot start
(Windows 98)"

Problem: After upgrading to Kerberos 5, I receive the following error message when trying to open Bear Access:

"The application failed to initialize properly (0x0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application" when running under Windows 2000.

"The KRBV4W32.DLL file cannot start. Check the file to determine the problem." when running under Windows 98.

Solution: The new method of handling the Kerberos tickets in memory under Windows relies on a service that is part of the Client for Microsoft Networks. Installing the client software will remove the error. To do this,

You must first check to see if this error is actaully caused by the service.

  1. Click on Start | Run and then type in "cmd" to open a Command Prompt.
  2. Type in "krbcc32s.exe".
  3. You should see this message "An error occured while starting/running the server (1747)"
  4. If you see this message you must install Client for Microsoft Networks.

To install Client for Microsoft Networks while running Windows 2000

  1. Click Start | Settings | Control Panel
  2. Double-Click on Network and Dial-up Connections
  3. Right-click on Local Area Connection and select Properties
  4. Click on Install...
  5. Click Client then Add...
  6. Select Client for Microsoft Networks
  7. Click OK then Close
  8. Try Bear Access again.

To install Client for Microsoft Networks while running Windows 98

  1. Click Start | Settings | Control Panel
  2. Double-Click on Network
  3. Click on Add...
  4. Click Client then Add...
  5. On the left select Microsoft
  6. On the right select Client for Microsoft Networks
  7. Click OK twice.
  8. Click Yes to reboot your computer.
  9. Try Bear Access again.
