Install Bear Access for Windows

Bear Access 2007 was released on June 12, 2007.

Bear Access is the name of Cornell's delivery system for applications and services the Cornell community uses. Bear Access has two parts: the infrastructure which is the program that delivers the services and the services themselves.

Some components of Bear Access are different depending on the operating system version on your computer. For details, see the Summary of Changes page.

Follow these instructions to install and begin using the Bear Access infrastructure and applications.

Download the Bear Access Installer

You can download the Bear Access installer from the web.

Download the Installer from the Web

Warning: The installer is over 400 MB and can take hours to download over a phone line.

You will need 2 GB of extra free disk space temporarily during installation.

  1. Download the installer from http://cufs.cit.cornell.edu/bearaccess/ba2007/ba2007.exe.
    You will be asked to save the file. Save it to your desktop, your downloads folder, or any other location. Remember where you've saved the file.
  2. Locate the installer. It is named ba2007.exe.
  3. Double-click the installer, ba2007.exe, to open it.
  4. In the Security Warning window, click Run.

    Click Run

  5. Continue with the Run the Bear Access Installer procedure.

Run the Bear Access Installer

  1. An InstallShield Wizard window appears and remains on the screen until all of the files are extracted.
  2. The installer opens. On the first screen, click Continue.
  3. Click Continue

  4. Click Install Bear Access Infrastructure.
  5. Click Install Infrastructure

  6. In the Welcome window, click Next.
  7. Click Next

  8. In the License Agreement window, click I accept the terms in the license agreement, then click Next. Note that certain components of Bear Access can not be taken out of the United States.
  9. Click I accept

  10. In the Setup Type window, click Complete, and then click Next.
  11. In the Ready to Install window, click Install.
  12. A Status window displays messages while the installer runs. When the InstallShield Wizard Completed window appears, click Finish.

  13. Next you need to install each Bear Access application. In the Bear Access Setup window, click Install Bear Access Applications.
  14. Click Continue

  15. In the Install Bear Access Services window, click the service you want to install, for example, Thunderbird Mail. The installer for that service will open. Follow the onscreen instructions.
  16. When the installer completes, click Finish.

    If you are prompted to restart your computer, do so now. After your computer restarts, continue installing services. Double-click the installer, ba2007.exe, to open it and then continue this procedure starting at step 9.

  17. In the Install Bear Access Services window, click the next service you want to install. When you're finished installing the services you want, click Exit, and then in the Bear Access Setup window, click Exit again.
  18. If you want to install other services later, the installers are available in the Bear Access uPortal.Cornell channel. Scroll to the bottom of the channel to the Installers folder.

  19. Continue with the Symantec Client Security installation instructions.

Start Bear Access

  1. Make sure your network connection is active.

  2. On the Start menu, click Bear Access via uPortal.Cornell.

  3. If prompted, sign in with your NetID and NetID password.

  4. Click the Bear Access tab in the uPortal.Cornell window.

  5. Click any folder to see the available services, and then click a service to start it.
  6. Click a service to start it

Configure Bear Access Services

You may need to configure Bear Access applications the first time you use them.
