Computing at Cornell Bear Access Online Services

FileZilla

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a method of transferring files over the Internet.
FileZilla is the FTP program distributed with the Windows version of Cornell's Bear Access suite of services. Use FileZilla to get files from public servers or to transfer files from your computer to an FTP server on which you have an account (for example, a departmental server or the CU People system).

Do you use the CornellC mainframe? FileZilla cannot connect to CornellC (VM/CMS). Continue using the WS-FTP application, found in the Bear Access Campus Hosts folder.

Installing FileZilla

  1. If you haven't already, install Bear Access.
  2. Go to uportal.cornell.edu, log in, and click the Bear Access tab.
  3. Click the Bear Access tab

  4. Click the Installers folder to open it.
  5. Click the Network Tools folder to open it.
  6. Click Filezilla.
  7. Click Installers folder.

  8. A setup wizard will open. In the License Agreement window, click I Agree.
  9. In the next three windows, click Next, and then click Install.
  10. When installation is complete, click Close.

Connect to an FTP Server with FileZilla

  1. Start FileZilla. (Click the the FileZilla icon on your desktop or in your Windows Start menu. Or, in the Bear Access channel of uPortal.Cornell, clickthe Network Tools Folder, and then click FTP Client.

  4. In the User box, enter your username name on the remote system. On a server where you have your own files, you would enter your username. Public archive sites may allow access by users identifying themselves as anonymous.
  5. In the Password box, type the password for your username. To access your own files on a server where you have an account, use your password for the server. For the CU People system, enter your NetID password.

Anonymous users are usually asked to enter their e-mail address as a password. Some sites reject a connection when the password does not match the format of an e-mail address.

  6. You can usually leave the Port box blank. Some servers require you to enter a port number.
  7. Click Quickconnect and then select Connect and bypass proxy settings.
  8. Click the Quick Connect menu

FileZilla opens. Your computer (Local Site) is on the left and the server (Remote Site) is on the right. Navigate to different locations on either system. Drag and drop files or folders to copy files.
