CIT will pay a per instance bonus to a CIT employee whose referral is subsequently hired by CIT for an open full-, part-time regular or limited term whose appointment is greater than one year. Temporary and casual appointments are excluded.
Background and Reasons for the Policy
Recruiting great talent is important for CIT's continued growth and success. This program is intended to bring in the best possible talent for CIT and is in support of the University's mission of equal employment opportunity for all candidates. Therefore, if CIT employee refers a applicant for a position, that applicant's credentials will be given equal consideration to other applicants. If qualified, the referral will go through the standard hiring process. This includes the referral needing to officially apply for opportunities through the University's online application process.
Overview
CIT will offer a referral fee of $500 (less applicable taxes and withholding) to the referring CIT employee within 30 days of the referral's hire. The referring employee must be employed by CIT at the time of the referral's hire and have submitted the CIT Employee Referral form as outlined in the Process/Procedure section below in order to receive the referral fee.
The referral fee is considered a recruiting cost and will subsequently be paid from the budget of the area where the position will be part of.
Eligibility
Qualifying referrals can be made by a regular full- or part-time CIT employee, a temporary employee, or a limited term employee of CIT. The program is limited to referrals for individuals who are not currently employed at Cornell and for positions that do not report to the referrer, are not part of the immediate workgroup of the referrer, and the referrer is not part of the hiring decision.
Independent or external consultants are not eligible for referral unless they have not performed any work at CIT for twelve consecutive months or longer. Individuals who work for Cornell through a third party vendor where either a non-compete agreement would be violated or an agency fee would be required in hiring the candidate are not qualified to be submitted as an employee referral.
CIT Directors and HR staff are not eligible to receive the referral bonus.
Process/Procedures
There are two scenarios that can occur in making a referral.
Scenario 1: A position is open and a CIT employee refers someone he/she knows who they believe is a qualified applicant and meets eligibility requirements. The referee is expected to:
Scenario 2: A CIT employee refers someone they know for potential future openings. The referee is expected to:
To participate in this program, a CIT employee must complete the CIT Employee Referral form for each referral and send to CIT HR, 200 CCC. The form must be received before the referred applicant applies for an open position. Referral forms will be kept on file for one year from the date the form is received by CIT HR.
CIT HR will notify the CIT employee of the pending bonus if the referral is hired.
In the event more than one CIT employee refers the same candidate, the person who submitted the referral form first will receive credit for the referral.
The CIT HR Office will notify the employee who submitted the request of any potential violations.
If Employee Referral Form is not received by CIT HR before the referred applicant applies for the position, the CIT employee may not be eligible to receive the referral bonus if the referral is hired.
University definitions are marked with an asterisk, all others are CIT definitions.

| Question | Answer/Examples |
|---|---|
| I would like to refer someone for a posted CIT position who already works at Cornell, am I eligible to receive the referral fee? | Unfortunately, the CIT Employee Referral Program is limited only to referrals for those individuals who are not currently employed by Cornell. The program's intent is to bring new talent to the university and specifically, to CIT. However, mentioning CIT job opportunities to someone within the Cornell community who may be a good fit is a wonderful demonstration of CIT's value of Community. |
| Can I refer my spouse, significant other, or family member for an open job opportunity? | Yes, as long as they are not currently employed at the University, you are not part of the hiring decision, the position is not within your immediate workgroup, and the position does not report into you. |
| Do I need to submit a referral form for more than one position if I am referring the same person for each of them? |
No, CIT HR will keep all referral forms on file whether they are submitted for a specific position or potential future openings. However, it¹s recommended that you contact your HR representative if you know your referral has applied for more than one CIT position as well as ask your referral to indicate they were referred to the position(s) by you on their application. |
| How will I know if another CITer referred the same person as I did? |
CIT HR will keep a central repository of all referral submissions date stamped of when received. In the event that more than one CITer refers the same person, CIT HR will contact those employees. The person who sent the referral form first will receive the referral fee if the person is hired. |
| I referred someone for a CIT position who was hired as a temporary employee, can I receive the bonus? | If the duration of the initial appointment is less than one year, you will not be eligible to receive the bonus. If the person is subsequently hired into a regular or limited term position as outlined above, you will be eligible to receive the bonus. |
| I am a supervisor and would like to refer someone for an open CIT position. Is this considered an qualifying referral? | Yes, as long as the position does not directly report into you, you are eligible for the referral bonus. |
| How long will my referral form be kept on file? | Referral forms will be kept on file for one year from the date the form is received by CIT HR. |
